Skills in the City
Skills in the City is an initiative designed to combat unemployment across the North West.
The scheme gives City West residents the opportunity to undertake a six week training course to begin learning the skills in a career of their choice, before working with a local business to gain experience and learn direct from professionals in areas such as hospitality and catering.
Kevin Melia, 54, from Eccles, is one of the programme graduates and had always dreamed of having his own career.
He had spent most of his working life moving from job-to-job and had struggled to find full-time employment.
But, thanks to Skills in the City, he is now kick-starting his career working at The Dock Yard restaurant at MediaCityUK.
Kevin said: “I have really embraced going back to work. Going through the course was the best thing I have ever done.
“Gaining these qualifications has added another string to my bow, giving me an advantage in the job market and helping to boost both my confidence and also the confidence my employer has in me.
“Going through Skills in the City has given me a bright new future and allowed me to enjoy going back to work – I recommend anyone who is struggling to find work to get a place on the scheme.”
