Mum launches fashion enterprise from home

A stay at home mum-of-three from Salford has transformed her life by launching her own fashion enterprise.
Tsungai George, 36, dreamed of a high flying career in law after she left Staffordshire University in 2006, however, after moving to Salford to work for the Department of Work and Pensions in a job centre, she soon found she was struggling to pay for childcare and maintain a career.
Unable to balance the books, Tsungai resigned from her job in 2014 to be a full-time mum.
It was only when a leaflet on the Don’t Keep It Under Your Hat business support programme dropped through her door, that she thought of a way to find a job while still being able to look after her children.
“I had never really thought about it before, but being my own boss was the perfect option for me,” said Tsungai.
“Running my own business is the best way to be able to look after my children, earn money and fulfil my career ambitions.”
After enquiring about the programme – which provides people in the North West with the skills and tools to start their own businesses – Tsungai decided to build a business around her personal passion for jewellery.
She said: “With so many new platforms like eBay and Amazon that enable small businesses to sell, I knew I could combine my passion for jewellery to set up an online shop.
“But I had no idea where to start. There are so many things to think of, and with having to balance family life, it could quickly become very difficult.
“Thankfully, the business advice I received was great. Time was taken to walk me through the process and formulate a plan. Now I have a plan, a grant and the tools to get make sure my new online business thrives.”
As part of the programme, Tsungai received advice on how to register the company, which she called Sparkles and Gems Jewellery, with HM Revenue and Customs as well as set up digital platforms to provide outlets for her to sell jewellery from wholesalers based locally in Manchester. She was also able to improve her marketing and social media skills so she could advertise her business.
